CYCLING × PHOTOGRAPHY / AN IDEA TO EXPLORE

Beyond
speed.

What do I start to see when I stop chasing the next kilometre?

Climbing is demanding. But the view along the way is part of what makes it worth doing. I want to bring that same attention to my photographs.

ON TWO WHEELS. WITH OPEN EYES.

03 / BEHIND THE CAMERA

BAY AREA
CALIFORNIA

A camera.
A bicycle.
A different perspective.

I’m Zhang, a photographer based in California’s Bay Area.

I photograph street life, cars, sport, and the places I pass through. I’m interested in the moment when a familiar scene becomes worth looking at again.

Away from the camera, I ride and play the yangqin. Movement, rhythm, and close observation keep finding their way into how I see.

FIELD NOTE / 001 · A PHOTOGRAPHIC QUESTION

Beyond
speed.

What do I start to see when I stop chasing the next kilometre?

On a hard climb, it’s easy to pay attention only to the next bend. Yet the landscape is part of what makes the effort worthwhile. That tension — between getting somewhere and noticing where I am — is a question I’d like to explore through photography.

A possible approach

Photograph the same route at different paces. Place a wide view beside a small detail. Compare a frozen instant with a frame that lets movement blur. Look for what becomes visible when speed stops being the point.

This is a direction for future work, rather than a completed photo series.
